Slammin’ More Salmon
For the first time in many years we did the mad dash fishing trip to the Kenai. John and I with friends Matt and Angie left town around three with our rods and coolers. We caught our first sockeye around 7 and fished until 10. We ended up with 9 reds and a half of a silver. (A prop had already tried to filet the other side.) Arrived back home around 3 a.m. this morning. What a blast! It was hot and sunny and hardly anyone was on the river. I don’t know if there are many prettier places to catch big fish.
Fresh, gutted, headed sockeye is $5/pound at Costco. So, each fish we caught is $25-30 each if we had to buy our own. Makes it worth the gas.
Extreme Fishing
This from yesterday’s Anchorage Daily News. These guys are nuts! Bored with the ho-hum fishing in Alaska saltwater they wanted to catch fish bigger than their boats. So, that means angling from kayaks for salmon sharks. Yep, sharks. Salmon sharks are up to seven feet long and, to be fair, not aggressive unless you’re a salmon. But as you can see in the pic they hooked into some big ones that took them ’sleighing.’ If you want to go give Liquid Adventures a call and head to Seward.
Fish are in!
The second run of sockeye (red) salmon is almost a week late but they are here now! Tomorrow, we’re off to the mouth of the Kenai to dipnet some fish. Our family has a permit for 65 fish. That’s a lot of fish and, hopefully, we’ll be able to nab that many. The trick is being there when there is not a commercial opening at the same time.
